I'm intrigued by the prospect of a 3D Buck movie. I wonder in what 'style' it will be in. Will it be violent and dark? Ultra modern or steampunk? WWI elements? LOL Wink

Anderson sure had his critics though. Looking forward to it nevertheless.

Speaking of World War II (the one we are discussing is The Great War, NOT WWI - at least to its contemporaries and combatants) was called Mr. Roosevelt's War by many conservative Americans.

The whole issue you raise is seen in a historical context wherein 20-20 hindsight makes one feel smug and superior.

The Great War (also the war to make the world safe for democracy) was brutal, deadly, gory, indiscriminate and mostly an exercise in futility. Millions of casualties and dead were the result. Tens-of-thousands of maimed and crippled men (and women) were the result.

The retributions and harsh peace treaties had a direct bearing upon the rise of Adolph Hitler and the NAZI party in Germany. The economy of Germany sank to such a low that workers were paid mid and end of their workday so they could quickly spend the money because it was worth so little. The value truly dropped by the hour! This provided very fertile environments for the NAZI platforms and promises. People were receptive and willingly accepted many of Hitler's and his cohorts' statements as German gospel, THUS, propelling both Germany and the world to a far deadlier and more widespread conflict just a generation after the Great War Armistice of 11 November 1918!

The causes of the ware are mostly as stated by Gil's character. Most Americans of that era (as many still do) detest monarchies and royals!

I am of partial French descent, thus I find the sentiment jarring BUT my historical knowledge also tells me this is true of heh USA in that era.

Don't think so? Well look at D.W. Griffith's "Birth Of A Nation!" While an outstanding film work of its day, it also reflected the passions and biases prevalent in the USA at that time. This too is jarring and unsettling! yet, less than 100 years later we have a US President of African ancestry.

I prefer to know what was prevalent in history and why that was the sentiment of large numbers. That way I can understand the root causes and work to live and extol sentiments and beliefs that promote peace, acceptance and human dignity. If WE, as a nation, whitewash our past we will NEVER learn the lessons and foibles of our ancestors so we will be doomed to eventually repeat those same beliefs and practices.

I am not saying your thoughts are wrong BUT I am stating why I approve of these statements in this or any story that promulgates itself as one with historical elements.

I find William's (Gil) statements no more offensive than the recent decrying of the weakness of the US, Greek or Spanish economies - so badly battered by mismanagement, a Pollyana attitude, greed, sub-prime lending and those destructive (baseless) derivatives investments!

It has been reported Paul WS Anderson will direct a Buck Roger feature film in 3-D.  The story is on the aintitcool news front page.  Harry Knowles has wrote the article but be warned it's full of profanity.

I've read language before but geeze....

I've been waiting for someone to mention WWII. I kinda think that people know more about WWII than they do WWI. WWII is keep alive, so to speak, with all the movies such as Schindler's List, where as WWI has faded away. Nothing should be White-washed.

all I'm saying is Gils character said something that wasn't exactly correct, yes it was his opinion at the time, his views etc and probably that of the country. But I think it's a shame that he said it even if it was an emotional fleeting comment.

I understand how you feel.

You must also understand that those type of "feelings" are what has gotten "Tom Sawyer" and "Huck Finn" banned in many schools in America.  Angry

The fact is that showing contemporary attitudes in the past correctly in historical fiction is a way to learn about who we were. Should all the movies about Germany in WWII change the way the people in them speak and feel about the Jewish population? I don't anyone would suggest white-washing the Nazi's to speak politically correctly so that young people watching "Schindler's List" won't get the wrong idea and think the Jews caused the economic downfall that inspired WWII.

And, to paraphrase... If we don't know history, we can't learn from it, and we are in jeapordy of repeating it out of ignorance.
